Before you start

Safety

Spora is built to be simple and useful. But sharing your Internet connection is not without risk. This page explains what you should know.

Only share with people you trust

When you share your Internet through Spora, the other person's online activity goes through your connection. To websites, services, and your ISP, it looks like that activity is coming from you.

Only share with people you would let use your home Wi-Fi. If they do something illegal or harmful online, it could be traced back to your IP address.

Is my traffic encrypted?

Yes. Spora encrypts all traffic between peers end-to-end, whether your devices connect directly or through a relay. Nobody between you and your friend can see what you're doing.

About relays

Most connections (about 70%) go directly between the two devices. When a direct connection can't be established, Spora routes traffic through a relay server. The relay only forwards encrypted data and never has the keys to decrypt it. When your traffic goes through our relays, all we see is encrypted data we have no way to read.

The relay does see the IP addresses of both devices, when they are connected, and how much data passes between them. It can't forward traffic without that.

Can they access my local network?

No. When you share your connection, the other person can only reach the open Internet through you. Spora blocks access to devices on your local network: your printer, your NAS, your smart home devices. They can't see or connect to anything on your home network.
